EU Mattress Scrappage The Facts.

EU Mattress Scrappage Subsidy Scheme:

New Mattress
How it works:
Irish citizens over the age of 50 are able to trade in an old mattress and get a 40% discount against a top quality new mattress of the same size or smaller. Also they are able to claim a 90% discount on a second mattress of the same standard.
The old mattresses are collected and taken to a recycling centre. Here they are graded and refurbished. From there they are shipped to West Africa and given to those who need them. The method of shipping uses empty container space on ships already going to West Africa. This way the carbon footprint is as small as possible.

Who is sponsoring the scheme:
UK manufacturers IBC are providing the new mattresses and delivering them. They will also deal with the collection and refurbishment of the old mattresses. Mamou International will distribute the recycled mattresses to the needy in West Africa. They do this free of charge. Mamou Intl is also affiliated with AFROTRADE http://www.afrotrade.net This is a well established and reputable organisation.

Who will benefit:
Obviously the over 50’s have a clear benefit here. Also the people of West Africa, where a mattress is considered a luxury will gain. People in Carlo and Kilkenny stand to gain from new jobs, IBC project that they will employ up to 25 locals. How about IBC and Mamou? IBC are using their substantial promotion budget, not to buy ads but rather to provide something of value to the community. Hopefully this will prove to be a long lasting and successful program for all concerned. Mamou will be able to provide good quality mattresses to people who can only dream of owning one. There is one other beneficiary, our environment. By giving these old mattresses a new lease of life instead of sending them to a landfill site, the impact on the environment is reduced. They are shipped in a way that utilises space on container ships already making the journey to Africa. So the whole project is ecologically sound.

Why is IBC bothering to do all this? Our mattress programme will build goodwill locally. If only one in ten of these satisfied clients go on to order some of our bedroom furniture then IBC will make a profit and win a new happy customer.IBC are well established and have been featured for the past 9 years almost every week in the Sunday Times and many other media. They feel that by sponsoring the mattress scrappage it will be a more effective way of building a customer base rather that splashing out tens of thousands on regular advertising methods which all their competitors are already doing.IBC will grade and recycle the mattresses they take in as scrappage and ship them on empty containers returning to their affiliate company in West Africa. These mattresses will be distributed free to the neediest and will be overseen by the Mamou Intl office in Conakry ,Guinea,West Africa. A clean recycled mattress will mean alot to the average African. It also is better for the Irish environment.
